The story of Advaya Silk's passionate journey
The word "Advaya" (Sanskrit: अद्वय) means "unique," "original," "not two," or "without a second". It also signifies non-duality or oneness.
We are Linda and Shane! We stumbled across a relatively unknown women owned business in 2022 that were manufacturing robes made from upcycled silk sarees. We absolutely loved this concept and immediately felt that this was a beautiful product to offer to our clients in our day spa businesses that we still own and actively run today. Our day spa clients also immediately fell in love with the uniqueness of each piece knowing that e very robe was a one of a kind and came with a luxuriousness in every garment. Our clients would often comment that when they put their robe on, they would feel very luxe and gorgeous. We could see that our clients not only loved that they could own a thoughtfully designed silk garment but that it was sustainable because each piece has been hand selected from ethically traded recycled silk sarees.
It was evident through our sales in the spa’s that this was a favourite among our clients and we loved what this small ethical business had the potential to go to a greater community. So, we reached to them to collaborate to take their concept further and so Advaya Silk was born in 2025.
Threads of heritage
Our supplier embraces the concept of bartering and recycling through their collaboration with Bhandewali, a dedicated utensil seller. Bhandewali comes all the way to doorstep, offering shiny steel utensils in exchange for old sarees or clothes. She collects these sarees regularly, building up a collection that she later takes to her local upholstery adda, where she exchanges them for money.
As part of their commitment to sustainability, they visit these addas and carefully select sarees that can be recycled. They bring these sarees to their production unit and determine which products can be created from them. They then assign the fabric to their talented team of artists based on their specialisation.
Weaving stories through sustainable silk
Guided by specific instructions, their artists work diligently in their respective areas of expertise. One artisan focuses on fabricating the products, finding innovative ways to minimize wastage. The fabric cutter carefully cuts the fabric into pieces, which are then sent for stitching. Their team of tailors skilfully sew the pieces together, creating the final product.
To ensure the highest quality, their professional team conducts thorough quality checks on each product before they are sent to us. Once we place our order with them after carefully selecting each unique piece, their team irons the garments and packages them using reusable materials.
Through this process, we not only contribute to the recycling efforts but also support local artisans and promote sustainable practices. We take pride in offering you beautifully crafted products that are both environmentally conscious and ethically produced.
Artisans who breathe life into silk
The process of producing a finished product is sometimes challenging and calls for a lot of cooperation and work. It requires the diligent labour of a group of six to seven people who work together to make sure it is completed to a high standard. Every artisan and designer is essential to making the product a reality, from acquiring resources to production and quality control. Their combined skills and knowledge produce a final product that exceeds our standards for craftsmanship and quality.
